As the weather starts getting colder and leaves are falling some people believe it is time put away gardening tools. But winter is an important time to prepare your garden to next year’s crop. It will take less than a day to get your garden ready for the upcoming winter.
When frost is forecasted for your area (usually around late October or November) or nighttime temperatures drop to less than forty-five degrees Fahrenheit for more than four days in a row it is time to begin preparing your garden. Make notes of which plants did not do well and which plants grew well in the past season. In the fall is a good time to decide which plants should go and which will remain in your garden next year.
You should begin cleaning up your garden by pulling out weeds that may have cropped up, and raking fallen leaves. Rotten leaves and weeds can carry diseases and insects that might be harmful to your garden. Rid your garden of spent annual plants, and harvest your vegetables and other plants that cannot withstand the winter weather.
You need to clean your gardening tools and put them in a safe place so they won’t rust.
