Well, it’s that time of year. The days are getting longer and the weather is getting
warmer. After the long winter months. I’m anxious to get back into working outside. March is a time to plan for your vegetable garden and flower beds. Based on my USDA plant hardiness zone of 6. Here are some things that needs done as spring arrives.
Planning
Find when your frost free date is for your area so you know when you can start planting your plants outside.
Start laying out your garden on paper so you know what, when, where you are going to plant and how much you want to plant.
Cleanup and Pruning
Clean up any debris flower beds and cut back perennial grasses so new growth can come up cleanly.
This is the time of year to prune your fruit bushes and trees before they become active again for summer growth.
Your roses should be pruned and feed to encourage strong growth in the summer.
Planting
Now is a good time to plant your tomato, pepper, and eggplant seeds indoors under lights. Cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli and be moved outdoors under a cold frame or a protected area.
Once the soil is workable you may plant blueberries and strawberries.
Lawn Care
Clean up tree branches and sticks that came down over the winter and any leftover leaves from the fall, so it does not kill the grass as it starts springing forth for spring.
Between February to April you should be fertilizing your lawn with a fertilizer that has crabgrass preventer in it. By preventing crabgrass seed from germinating in the spring will save you trouble of battling it in the summer.
So, get out there and enjoy getting you hand dirty in the soil and seeing the new growth as spring abounds in your garden, flower beds and lawns this spring.
